In this page, I will:

  1. Briefly describe my team chemical device

  2. Show how the team planned, allocated the tasks, and executed the project.

  3. Document the entire design and build process of the chemical device and include videos, pictures, and screen captures of the processes.

  4. Include “Hero shot” of every milestone of the processes, example the part A that was 3D printed, part B that was laser-cut, electronics components moved/worked according to the program. Hero-shot is taken with the person-in-charge holding/working/making the parts.

  5. Include the name of the person who was in-charge of every part of the project.

  6. Document my individual contribution to this project.

  7. Provide the link to the page of the blog of my teammates.

  8. Describe problems encountered and how the team solved them.

  9. Include all the project design files as downloadable files.

  10. Embed the final prototype design file, i.e., the final fusion360 design file showing the entire prototype.

  11. Type my Learning reflection on the overall project development.

Our team Chemical Device

  • In this section, I will briefly describe my team chemical device.

Our team came up with a idea of a device which can monitor alcohol concentrations of the surrounding air, without the driver blowing directly into it.

Our product can also be installed in a car, so that constant monitoring by police officers will not be necessary. This will increase the efficiency of the work done when it is automatic instead of manual.

We also aimed to make it very safe by making is on standby 24/7. So whenever the car is started, this system automatically turns on and analyses the alcohol in the air.

Our product is also rather simple and takes up little space, so it can fit in almost every car. It also has a very low capital cost and operating cost.

  • What it is. What problems will the chemical device solve?

After conducting some secondary research, my group and I have found that drink driving has been on the rise lately and we want to create a product that will reduce the numbers of accidents related to drink driving. Hence to avoid this problem once and for all, our team has decided to make a device that will prevent the risks of accidents related to drink driving.

Problems and solutions

In this section I will describe the problems encountered in the design and build process and how the team solved them.

  • System Integration

After connecting all the parts together, we realised there our product was not working as well as we expected to. We failed to research more on the weight loads of the motors available to us, as the components we used were too heavy. Our acrylic box and chains we used were too heavy, causing the gears to not move at all (insert pic)

Hence, we removed the idea of using chains and tried to use the acrylic box in our protoype. Our 360°step motor did not have enough torque even though we designed the gears to be a torque multiplier. Since it was just a prototype we changed the material of the acrylic box to cardboard to show and simulate what is supposed to happen in our presentation.

Project Design Files as downloadable files

In this section, I will provide all the design files (Fusion360 files, .dxf files, .stl files, arduino programs files) as downloadable files.

Below is my Learning Reflection on the overall Project Development.

Overall, I feel that this project was okay. This project helped me to learn a lot more about Arduino programming. Last semester we were widely exposed to AutoCAD 360, 3D printing, etc. However this semester taught us more about Arduino Programming, which was something I was not expecting.

At the beginning, I really disliked Arduino as I found it very difficult to understand, and I was not able to see the point of learning Arduino. However, after starting the project and being widely exposed to Arduino, I learnt to appreciate the beauty of it.

Learning Arduino myself while working on this project really helped me to understand how each codes work, and what the different numbers in the codes mean. I was able to also understand the different wiring of each components and where each wires should go. For example, at first I was not able to use the breadboard well. Since I was dealing with multiple components, using the breadboard was crucial. I researched more on breadboards online, and even consulted with others who were more familiar with Arduino, which enhanced my exposure to the wiring of components. All these allowed me to be a lot more familiar with Arduino as I understand it better now.
